| 16mm Film Transfer Factoids The size of the image on a 16mm film frame is .404" x .295". Each 16mm film frame is just over a tenth of a square inch in size (.11918 square inches to be exact). The native aspect ratio for 16mm film is 1.369 For standard definition transfers the aspect ratio is always changed to 1.33 (4:3 aspect ratio) The size of the image on a Super16 film frame is .493" x .292" Super 16mm film has sprocket holes on only one side of the film. In order to get a wider image, Super16 uses more of the film for image & eliminates the space for an audio track & second set of sprocket holes. The native aspect ratio for Super16 is 1.688 Important note: Almost all 16mm film sold today has sprocket holes on only one side. If you use this film in a Standard 16mm camera your camera's gate will limit the image size to Standard 16mm. Super 16 is now used as a format for High Definition TV aquision. Home moves in the past were not shot in the Super16 format. 1920x1080 High Definition has an aspect ratio of 1.77 (1920/1080p=1.77....) (1280/720p=1.77....) |
