Download these sample Quicktime movies to verify that your computer & editing software is High Definition compatible. All files are from 40 year old 16mm color reversal (positive) film. 1560x1080p 24 frames per second. Files are between 32-39GB in size.
File Data Rate Length Hard Drive Space High Definition Quicktime Motion JPEG-A 100 Mb/s 78 frames ~ 50GB per hour High Definition Quictime Component video 651 Mb/s 11 frames ~ 290GB per hour High Definition Quicktime Animation 835 Mb/s 6 frames ~ 370GB per hour High Definition Quicktime Raw 976 Mb/s 6 frames ~ 490GB per hour
The final data rate of your transfer may be lower than listed to the left, depending on the frame rate of your film. All information is based on 24 frames per second. If your film was shot at 18fps you can expect a proportional decrease inthe data rate because there are fewer frames per second. A lower data rate does not damage the picture in any way.
High Definition File Format Recomendation Motion JPEG-A has a data rate around 100 Mb/s and consumes about 50GB of hard drive space per hour. For most applications this is a very good compromise between high quality images and a reasonable data rate. Motion JPEG-A can be edited with Sony Vegas 8 PRO, Final Cut PRO, Adobe Premiere PRO, and Quicktime PRO. Motion JPEG-A files will play smoothly on a typical contemporary computer or a powerful older computer. The higher data-rate file types - Component, Animation, or Raw - require more powerful computers, and are recommended only for professionals with very fast computers that employ a high-speed RAID. Download the 16mm sample files to test your computer's compatibility.
